Chandigarh Metro Project Faces Potential Delay- What Challenges Comes

As per the AAR alternative analysis report prepared by Rail India technical and economic services, the project includes two projects of 30 acres each, one in new Chandigarh and one in Mohali sector 87. Even the Chandigarh administration hopes to start work on the metro project by April, but it seems delayed. Delay in Chandigarh metro project is because the Punjab governments show unavailability of 30 acres in 87 sector for construction of project.

Functions, which include inspection and preservation, are done in the Metro project. According to the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) organized by Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), the mission consists of projects of 30 acres each, one in Mohali’s Sector 87 and any other in New Chandigarh (Mullanpur).

However, in the latest meeting with the UT administration, Punjab leader secretary Anurag Verma stated that land in Sector 87 changed into high cost, but they had been geared up to gather land for the project in New Chandigarh. Punjab even encouraged that one project have to be built in Chandigarh in place of Mohali.

Meanwhile, Haryana has agreed to assemble one project in Sector 27, Panchkula, and already submitted a suggestion to the UT administration.

Why was the Chandigarh metro project delayed?

UT adviser Nitin Yadav stated, “With Punjab delaying earmarking of land for the project, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will get delayed, which is to be sent to the valuable government for approval. We have told them to locate an option for the project if the proposed website online isn’t always financially possible. But till now, we have not acquired any report from them.”

During the meeting of the 23-member Unified Metro Transportation Authority (UMTA) on 18 December 2023, it was determined to write to the central government to take a very last call on whether the Metro project will have an expanded or underground network. The suggestion may be despatched handiest after the DPR is ready. Both Punjab and Haryana have already launched their contribution to the DPR’s coaching.

What affects the Metro network in Chandigarh

While an expanded Metro network will affect Chandigarh’s background and aesthetic enhancement, the underground tracks will bump up the venture value by over 70%.

In its assembly on 5 January, a Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) sub-panel said that the Metro project needs to be absolutely underground. The guidelines of the committee can also be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA)

Total costs of the metro project

The Alignment Option Report readied by means of RITES has indexed 3 corridors as a part of Phase 1, crossing through Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. Among them, the only one alongside Madhya Marg, which falls in Chandigarh’s history sectors (1 to 30), will be absolutely accelerated, while the other could be often multiplied and partially underground.

Phase 2, planned in Mohali and Panchkula, may also have a large and elevated network. However, opting for underground corridors is projected to grow the expenditure by nearly ₹8,000 crore, bringing the total project costs to around ₹19,000 crore.

Conclusion

The Chandigarh metro project is expected to be delayed because of several challenges. It shows that the metro network in Chandigarh affects the tracks and background, due to which it faces delays and obstacles.
