For long 80 years, the Pentagon became the largest office building in the world. Now, this title has been taken by a building in Surat, Gujarat, that became the house of a diamond trading center.

Surat is called the gem capital of the world, where 90 % of diamonds in the world are cut. The newly-constructed Diamond Bourse of Surat will become the one-stop destination for more than 65,000 diamond experts, including polishers, cutters, and traders, said the outlet.

Building as nine rectangle structure

The 15-story building is spread over 35 acres of land that has 9 rectangular structures. All these structures are interconnected by a central spine. The company that built the sprawling complex comprises more than 7.1 million square feet of floor space. The building will inaugurate officially by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this year in November. This construction of the building takes four years to complete.

The complex consists of a parking area and a recreational zone that are spread across 20 lakh square feet. It is not for profit organization that is promoted by SDB Diamond Bourse.

SDB diamond bourse is a company that is registered under section 8 of the companies act 2013. This organization was formed to establish and promote the diamond bourse in Gujarat, Surat.

The CEO of this project, Mahesh Gadhavi, said that the new building complex saves people from usually going to Mumbai via train. The building is designed by an Indian architecture company, Morphogenesis, which follows an international design competition. It surprised the Pentagon that it did not become part of the competition. He adds that all offices are bought by diamond companies before construction.

Features of SDB diamond bourse

• The Surat Diamond Bourse is expected to inaugurate by PM Modi this year in November.
• It accommodates the needs of the commercial center, including multipurpose halls like banquets, conference halls, kitchens, restaurants and dining spaces, among other areas for banking facilities and offices.
• Along with this, this building space is protected with security measures that not only give security but also take care of travelers’ connectivity.
• Despite this, it helps with a 20 lakh ft basement area, vehicle parking that has been provided, and a traffic layout that gives the one-way traffic circulation.

Democratic design

Indian architecture company design this building. They surpassed the Pentagon, which was not part of the brief competition. Instead, the size of the project was dictated by demand.

Morphogenesis said that the layout of this company creates a level playing area for small and large businesses. With offices connected by a long central corridor, a configuration of the airport terminal, occupants have similar access to facilities and amenities, described as a democratic design. This design is also informed by an architecture firm that researches the way how the Indian diamond trade works.
