The UT administration has requested that the municipal corporation’s and health department’s enforcement divisions produce a monthly progress report on actions taken against users of the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, 2016.

Make Chandigarh plastic-free

To protect the environment and make Chandigarh plastic-free, the UT administration has outlawed single-use plastic. During a recent review meeting, a senior UT official said issued instructions to that effect. Officials from the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) also alerted their superiors about the latest stakeholders’ meeting.

Complete ban plastic/thermocol items

CPCC officials held a meeting last week to inform the health superintendent, chief sanitary inspector, and sanitary inspectors about the UT administration’s notification, which was issued on September 27, 2019. Discussed the report and its amendments on the complete ban of identified single-use plastic/thermocol items were. Authorities have asked that people refrain from using any of the single-use plastic items that have been outlawed.

The Chandigarh administration announced a plastic ban in 2019 as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) maintain an eye on plastic items and rubbish disposal.

Remove three plastic products

At the request of manufacturers, the University of Texas administration removed three plastic products from the list of prohibited items last year. Instead of being placed on the ban list, the administration put plastic refill pouches with a capacity of less than 500ml, straws connected to tetra packs, and multilayered packaging used for food/snacks packaging under extended producer responsibility (EPR).

Plastic plates, glasses, party bloopers, plastic ribbons, and many other single-use plastic goods were banned in the city by the UT administration in September 2019.

Ban all one-time-use plastic products

The UT administration released the final notification to ban all one-time-use plastic products after receiving consent from former Punjab governor-turned-UT administrator V P Singh Badnore.

The UT released a draught notification in July 2019 and asked for comments and objections within 60 days. The committee received around 32 complaints from various resident welfare societies, traders, and industrialist organizations.

After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered it to produce an action plan for the orderly disposal of plastic trash, the administration implemented the following steps. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had decided that anyone caught using, storing, purchasing, dealing with, or supplying plastic bags, plates, glasses, or other allied products must pay Rs 5,000 in environmental compensation per occurrence.
